Rain, rain go away

Saturday, May 26th, 2007

When it rains here, it rains all. day. long. I can’t stand it because it makes everything so much harder — like trying to carry bags of groceries from the car to the house while also wielding an umbrella, and like trying to keep my son from splashing through puddles or falling down everywhere like he usually does. I absolutely hate going out in the rain, but since it lasts all day, I can’t very well avoid it. Ugh.

Looking for Life Insurance

Friday, May 25th, 2007

I recently started working outside the home again, but only on a part-time basis as a consultant. So even though I get a nice salary, I don’t get any benefits from the position. As a result, I’m left to look for a good life insurance policy that is also affordable.

I’ve heard from several people who said they had great luck finding cheap life insurance online, so that’s probably what I’m going to end up doing. I’ve run a few preliminary searches and have to admit that I’ve seen some pretty good deals on a few sites like Termco.com. I know their life insurance rates are much lower than the rates an agent from a nationwide company quoted to me a couple months ago, so when I’m ready to buy, I’ll probably go back to Termco.com.

School Olympics

Friday, May 25th, 2007

I was really busy yesterday and didn’t get a chance to post an update here. Part of the reason I couldn’t get much blogging done was that my son’s school had their “Olympics Day,” which of course I had to attend.

Bear in mind that he’s just four years old, so there wasn’t much real action to speak of. The kids ran a couple of footraces (a 20-yard dash or something like that), jumped rope (with the teachers twirling the ropes for them), and played a kids version of basketball with very low nets.

My son is extremely shy, so he actually didn’t participate much. He started crying when it was his turn to race, and he absolutely refused to play basketball at all. I was a bit disappointed because he usually loves games and is always playing these kinds of things at home. He still has to get used to school, I guess.

Computer is CRAWLING!

Friday, May 25th, 2007

I don’t know what’s going on with my computer right now, but recently it has been extremely SLOW. It takes forever to start up and shut down, and if I have more than one application running, they all get bogged down. Seriously, it takes close to a minute just to switch between the different windows I have open.

I think it could be a memory problem. I know it’s not a virus or any malicious spyware because I’ve got the latest version of Norton running and have scanned my hard drive numerous times. I’ve been talking about getting a computer memory upgrade for a while now, and probably shouldn’t put it off any more. It’s extremely frustrating when common tasks take two or three times longer than they should just because my CPU isn’t up to par.

Bad Ortho Day…

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

Man, today I had my worst ortho appointment yet! As you know, I’ve had braces on since November (lower) and December (upper). I’ve also got orthodontic appliances known as “molar bands” on four of my teeth to help move the molars into position a lot faster. So basically there’s a bunch of stuff going on in my mouth!

Anyway, because of the tooth movement caused by the molar bands, I have a large gap in my back teeth — the same amount of space that would be available after an extraction, but without the extraction. This makes chewing food and eating in general a very bothersome chore. I essentially have to chew all my food on the side of my mouth that doesn’t have the gap.

So something must have gone wrong when I was eating because my dentist noticed that I had some kind of food particle lodged in my gum! I didn’t feel it or anything, but apparently if left untreated it would have caused a nasty infection. Actually, it was well on its way to causing an infection and had formed a pus bubble or something.

My ortho had no choice but to slice into my gum to release the pus and wash the food particle out. So there I was just gushing blood as he drained everything out. It was totally disgusting — and quite upsetting to spit blood for 10 minutes straight!

I guess my ortho could see that I was worried about what was going on. He took patched me up and even took new X-rays to make sure that there wasn’t anything else to be worried about in that area.

I’m okay now, but I hope this NEVER happens again!!

Find a Good Credit Card

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

Getting a new credit card is one of those things that sounds easy to do — until you actually go about trying to find one! I mean, I always get random credit card applications in the mail from companies offering low interest rates, 0% balance transfers, and all that other good stuff. But I don’t keep those applications on file or anything like that, so now that I’m looking for a new credit card, I have to start my search from scratch.

After doing a bit of checking on the Internet, I found a site called CreditCardSearchEngine.com that will help out tremendously. This site allows users to search for credit cards based on specific criteria, such as low interest rates, balance transfers, rewards cards, frequent flyer cards, and things like that. CreditCardSearchEngine.com has lots of different cards in its database, so I can quickly compare all the best cards in whichever category interests me most.

This is definitely a great resource for anyone looking for a new credit card, so I’m glad I found it!

So SICK of System Doctor Spyware

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

Regular pop-up ads are bothersome enough, but the absolute worst in this category has to be those STUPID SystemDoctor ads that lock up my browser. I’ll be innocently surfing through blogs or other seemingly-normal site when I get that dreaded System Doctor pop-up alert. Of course, you can’t do anything else once that notice pops up. You have to acknowledge the box in some way, and even if you click “no” you still get taken to the System Doctor site.

This is the worst ad out there because you have zero control over it. At least with other pop-ups you can just close them and move on. But with SD, the only way I can avoid going to their stupid site is by using CTRL+ALT+DEL to call up my task manager, and then shutting down my browser from there.

I have no idea why people would willingly subject their readers to that SD crap — it’s a sure way to guarantee that I won’t be returning, ever. Idiots!!!

Tech Support from 866GeekNeed

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

I am not a tech-savvy person at all, so I often run into problems with my computer or with new software that I’m trying to use. Of course, trying to get tech support from the 800-numbers included with the manuals is basically an exercise in futility. Besides being put on hold for upwards of 20 minutes each time, I usually end up talking to someone who can’t explain anything in layman’s terms, which means that I inevitably come away from the experience more frustrated than ever.

So you can just imagine how excited I was to hear about the services provided by 866GeekNeed. 866GeekNeed is an independent phone-based technical support service that is committed to helping people solve their computer or software problems quickly and efficiently. You don’t need any special warranties to be able to take advantage of 866GeekNeed’s services, nor do their services cover just a few brands or manufacturers. They can handle everything from spyware and virus removal to connectivity trouble, and their explanations are easy to understand.

The first minute of each call is free, and 866GeekNeed charges just $1.99 per minute after that. I think that’s a bargain (especially when I consider the time I’ll save by waiting on hold forever), so I’ll definitely bookmark their homepage and give them a call the next time I have computer problems!
