Budget Tweaking

Since we just bought a new car, it looks like we might not have enough money to take our annual family vacation this summer. So I’ve been combing through our budget in the hopes of finding areas where we can save just a little bit more. Even if we can save 10% per month in a couple of different categories, we would have enough to go somewhere for a few days.

The problem is, we don’t have much wiggle room in our budget. The usual places to save are insurance and entertainment, so I checked those first.

We already get health insurance from my husband’s company, and thankfully don’t have to pay anything for that. We’re on the verge of getting a new policy for our car, which will be slightly lower than what we were paying before. That will help a bit.

There’s nothing we can do about our homeowner’s insurance because we just renewed the policy a few months ago.

So I guess that means we have to try to save from our entertainment budget. We’ve already cut down drastically on the number of times we go out to lunch and dinner during the week. Next up will be to reduce our movie rentals and video game purchases. That will be tough, but it’s only for a few months. Once we take our vacation (even if it’s just to Wisconsin Dells), we can go back to our regular budget.

Ugh, I hate trying to find “extra” money in our budget, especially when things are already so tight!
