Time to Renew

Monday, October 20th, 2008

A whole bunch of different services and memberships are up for renewal right around now, so I’m going to be spending lots more money this month than I originally expected. For instance, I’ve got to pay for my gym membership (I pay 12 months in advance for a nice discount), book club membership, and indoor tennis facility membership.

On the services side, I’ve got to renew my health and car insurance, and also check into a more comprehensive life insurance policy. Actually, instead of just renewing, I should shop around for better health and auto insurance quotes to see if I can lower my monthly premiums.

Well, on the bright side, I guess I can say that at least I have to make these payments before the holiday shopping season, which will leave me with a much better idea of how much we can comfortably spend on Christmas this year.

KATV News Anchor Attacked

Monday, October 20th, 2008

As I was making my rounds through the news sites just now, I read a disturbing article about how KATV news anchor Anne Pressly was brutally beaten in her Little Rock (AR) home. Details are still sketchy at this point, but early reports indicate that the attack might have been part of a robbery, as Pressly’s purse was missing from the scene. (Of course, that could also just be misdirection, as anyone who has ever watched an episode of CSI knows.)

Pressly was last heard from between 9:30pm and 10:30pm on Sunday night, and was discovered by her mother at around 4:30 this morning after failing to respond to a wakeup call. Pressly is currently in intensive care with “severe wounds”.

Even though I’ve obviously never seen Pressly’s work or anything like that, I was still saddened by this story. Here’s hoping she makes a full and speedy recovery!

Hiding Out

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

Usually, I do all my work at my desktop computer, which is at the back of the living room. That way, I can still feel like a part of the family as I get things done while my husband and son play video games or watch TV.

But today I was so far behind with certain projects that I just grabbed my laptop and went upstairs to the guest bedroom so I could work without interruption. I’ve managed to get a lot done up here, but am not quite ready to emerge from hiding just yet. I need to write three more articles, answer a few emails, and check my fantasy football scores before heading back down.

Ok, my five-minute break is over… back to work!

Sarah Palin SNL Appearance Video?

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

So I read that Sarah Palin made good on her word and showed up on SNL last night. Apparently, she was a good sport and stood by while Tina Fey did an impression making fun of her. She appeared in the opening, did the “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!”, and also sat in on the Weekend Update.

I am dying to see a video clip of this Sarah Palin SNL appearance, but can’t find one on YouTube or any other video sharing site. Correction: it was on YouTube, but I didn’t get to see it before it was yanked because of copyright infringement. Bummer.

Anyway, if any of you come across this particular Sarah Palin SNL vid, leave a link in the comments or something!

Getting Ready

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

How long does it take you to get ready for work? A friend and I were talking about this earlier today. She was complaining about how she has to get up at 5:30am in order to be out the door by 7:00. I couldn’t believe that it took her an hour and a half to get ready, since it only takes me about 25 minutes at the most.

It turns out that she waits to do everything in the morning, including showering, choosing an outfit, and ironing her clothes. I do all three of those things the night before I have to go to work, so when morning rolls around, I just throw on my clothes, put on some makeup, slip on my Clarks shoes, and head out the door.

I’ve been getting ready this way since I was in high school, so I really can’t understand people who have to rush around in the morning trying to do a bunch of stuff that should have been done a lot earlier. Oh, well… not my problem, I guess!

Beautiful Celebrity Skin

Friday, October 17th, 2008

I just read a short article on a Hollywood gossip type of site that featured a list of celebrities with the most beautiful skin. Now, I’m not usually the kind of person who envies anything about celebs in terms of their wealth, fame, or lifestyle. But I have to admit that I would love to have skin like Leighton Meester, Halle Berry, Nicole Kidman, Sandra Oh, Reese Witherspoon, or Kate Hudson. These ladies all have flawless faces and gorgeous skin.

As for me? Oh, I’ve been battling blemishes and other skin problems since I was a teenager, and have probably spent thousands of dollars on acne treatments over the past two decades to try to keep pimples under control. I would love to be able to shorten my skincare regimen down to cleansing and moisturizing instead of having to use a bunch of other creams, lotions, and toners, but I doubt that’s going to happen anytime soon. Good thing I resigned myself to this fact a long time ago!

Eminem New Freestyle Relapse

Friday, October 17th, 2008

I just read that Eminem has leaked a new freestyle rap called “I’m Having a Relapse”. Apparently this happened while he was promoting his new book The Way I Am, and according to the report I read, the song addresses some of the issues Slim Shady was dealing with during his time off, including panic attacks and addiction to sleeping pills.

In addition, Eminem will be releasing a new record, possibly by the end of the year. It’s called R3LAPSE and will likely feature his usual crew of Dr. Dre, Obie Trice, 50 Cent, and D12.

It’ll be interesting to see if Eminem still “has it” after all these years. I liked some of his older stuff, so I’m looking forward to the new album.

Boys will be boys…

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

My son had a friend over for a playdate today. It was fun for the boys, but was utterly headache-inducing for me. They were running around the whole time, climbing over furniture, fighting each other like Power Rangers, and basically screaming at the top of their lungs. They quieted down for a bit while playing Mario Kart Wii, but then were back at it a while later.

The capper came when they started tossing a Nerf football around the living room. My son did his best Tom Brady impression and drilled the table lamp from all the way across the room. It’s broken now and has to be replaced.

I threw in the towel after that, and called the other boy’s mom to pick up her son an hour early. Now I need to lie down in a dark room….
