Lame college prank

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

I didn’t know college students still pulled “pranks” on their profs. I’ve heard of people disassembling cars and reassembling them inside of offices or whatever, but I think this one — covering everything in an office in aluminum foil — is kinda lame. I’m surprised something like this made it onto the AP wire and Yahoo News. This happened at Gustavus Adolphus college in Saint Peter, MN — wherever that is!

DiCaprio won’t work with Mel

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Leonardo DiCaprio was supposed to work with Mel Gibson on a Viking film slated to begin production in the fall. But now he has pulled out of the project — presumably because of the recent brouhaha caused by Gibson’s (alleged) threats to girlfriend Oksana Whateverhernameis.

I think this is a good move by Leo, because Gibson has made too many missteps in his personal life for all this crap to be a fluke. The anti-Semitic/racist comments, demands for blowjobs, etc. It’s disgusting.

I couldn’t stand DiCaprio back during his Titanic heyday, but I have been warming to him ever since Blood Diamond. This just makes me like him even more.

NZ boy survives 16-story fall

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Have you heard about this story? It is just absolutely mind-boggling, and goes to show that some people have incredibly unbelievable luck. A 15-year-old kid was fooling around on his balcony when he somehow went over the edge and dropped 16 floors to what should have been a horrific death. But the sheet metal roof of a parking garage somewhat slowed his fall before he crashed on through to the concrete below. The roof was also insulated, which probably helped a bit as well.

The teen ended up with a broken wrist, a broken rib, a gashed up leg, and some internal injuries — but is expected to make a full recovery.

Can you imagine that?!

Tony Hayward out

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

BP CEO Tony Hayward will reportedly step down soon. He has obviously been the focal point of the firestorm of criticisms leveled at the petroleum giant since the Gulf spill, so this isn’t exactly an unexpected move. Even though Hayward wasn’t directly involved in the spill itself, he hasn’t exactly handled the post-accident PR as well as someone in his position should. Remember how he said he wished he could get his life back? Well, here’s your chance, Hayward. Let’s just hope he doesn’t get a massive severance or retirement package. How much worse would BP look if Hayward gets a couple million to walk away?

Name cards

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

I’m thinking of getting name cards printed up. I want to put my name, address, cell phone number, and email address on them so when it comes time to exchange that kind of info with someone, I can just hand them a nice card instead of scrounging around in my purse for a pen and piece of paper. People used to carry name cards all the time, right? I wonder why that practice went out of style, as it seems pretty practical to me.

This weekend I’m going to go to a place that does business card printing and see how much it would cost to get some name cards made up. I don’t need anything fancy, so hopefully I’ll get quoted a reasonable price.

Coming up short

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

OK, so I was able to register for the class that I mentioned in my last post. Trouble is, when I was calculating my budget for the fall semester, I totally forgot to include that class along with the others, which means I’m not going to have enough for tuition. My school will allow me to make payments, but there are extra fees and penalties associated with that move, so the class will end up costing me a lot more money than expected.

I’ve been looking for ways to come up with the extra cash, like joining the cheapest auto insurance network I can find, getting rid of cable, and sweating my butt off instead of running the AC all day long, but I don’t think those moves will help cover the cost of the additional class and books. I guess I’ll just have to suck up the extra fees!

Uh oh…

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

…I just remembered that I haven’t registered for one of the grad school classes I need to take this fall! I’m usually pretty good about staying on top of these kinds of things, but in this case, I had to pre-register for one class a long time ago — which I guess had me feeling that I was done in that regard. So I didn’t pay attention to any of the reminders that went out about deadlines. Registration is still open, but I’m so late now that I’m in danger of not getting into the classes I need in order to graduate on time.

CRAP!!!

$50,000 for Kane Puck

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

The Harry Caray restaurant group is offering $50,000 for the game-winning puck that clinched the Stanley Cup for the Chicago Blackhawks back in June. This is the puck that Patrick Kane flipped through goalie Michael Leighton’s legs, wedging it under the net and causing general confusion at the Wachovia Center. The goal was confirmed after a brief video review, and the Blackhawks secured their first championship in 49 years.

But no one knows what happened to the puck after that. Whoever produces the authenticated game-winning puck (how can they differentiate that one from any other used during the game?) will get $50,000 from Harry Caray’s. That’s a pretty high bounty for a piece of sports memorabilia!! Wish I had the puck… I’d part with it in a heartbeat.
