When I learned that I would be receiving a sizable tax refund, I initially thought I would do something responsible like buy the new mattress I need. But of course that didn’t happen. I ended up spending almost my entire refund at some of my favorite online stores, where I bought a bunch of clothes, shoes, books, and DVDs that I’d had my eye on for some time.

The first of my purchases should be arriving in just a few days. It’s funny, but even though I’ve been shopping online for 10+ years, I still get excited whenever I see UPS packages waiting on my doorstep when I arrive home from work. I also have my utility knife out on the table in the foyer and ready to go so I can get the boxes open without fuss.

Yes, clearly I’m a shopaholic — but at least I learned to embrace that fact long ago!

I am not a basketball fan at all, but I can get behind the Linsanity craze. I think it’s cool that Jeremy Lin is having this early success in the NBA — and not because he’s Asian. I just LOVE the fact that he is a Harvard grad!

It’s rare that Ivy Leaguers go on to have professional sports careers, so I tend to root for these guys when I learn about their background. That’s why I also like Ryan Fitzpatrick of the Buffalo Bills. Nobody really expects people from those programs to make an impact in the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, etc. so it’s awesome when they do!

After all the constant fuss and hype and buzz, I finally decided to give the TV series Downton Abbey a try. Unfortunately, I still don’t understand why it’s supposed to be so great. I couldn’t even sit through the entire first episode!! I watched for about 30 minutes before just turning the damn thing off. None of the characters interested me and there was NOTHING going on!

People always seem to pump up British television shows as superior to American fare, but honestly… I just don’t get it. I guess I’m too stoooopid to understand the point!

I’m one of those people that changes clothes as soon as I come home from work. I like to be comfortable in my house, so I typically hang out in sweatpants, tee shirts, or even nursing scrubs in the evenings and on weekends. I sleep in this stuff too because I don’t see the point of pajamas when lounge wear is already loose and comfy.

I admit that I’ve even run to the store while wearing scrubs, and have been asked by more than one person if I’m a nurse. At first I told the truth and said, “No, I just think scrubs are very comfortable to wear at home.” But since that answer led to such weird looks, I simply say “Yes” now!

Come on, I can’t be the only non-healthcare worker to wear scrubs at home, can I? Do you do it too?

I usually don’t even start thinking about my taxes until April 14th, but this year I got the jump on things and have already filed. I’m also slated to get a fairly sizable refund, which I HATE because that just means I gave the government an interest-free loan during the year.

But actually the refund will be rolling in at a good time. I really need new bedroom furniture, starting with a mattress. I seriously cannot bear sleeping on this old bed any longer. I wake up nearly every single day with a backache and I know it’s from the soft, saggy excuse of a mattress we have.

Now that I’m getting a tax refund, I’ll be able to do some shopping. Maybe I’ll get one of those expensive memory foam mattresses los angeles residents keep bragging about — as if California is the only place to buy Serta or something!

This time around, I’m going to go for the highest quality I can afford. My back simply can’t deal with cheap mattresses anymore!

Hahaha, I can’t stand the Patriots these days, so I LOVED seeing them lose the Super Bowl in heartbreaking fashion to the Giants once AGAIN. This is the enduring image I’ll have from the day: a subdued Brady who couldn’t even be bothered to gussy himself up into the “pretty boy” style he usually tries to adopt after games. I know he has probably already forgotten the game and he has his other three SB rings and millions of dollars as consolation, but whatever. I have a feeling he won’t taste another championship in his career.

Okay, I know people can make money from YouTube, but this is just insane. Apparently, the most popular guy on the site is a comic named RayWJ, whose videos draw millions of viewers and are said to earn him more than $1 million annually. What?!? A million dollars for making videos of yourself ranting against others? Sounds like a pretty good gig if you can get it!

I haven’t seen any of RayWJ’s stuff, but maybe I’ll check it out sometime. There’s got to be SOMETHING to him, right? As the article I read pointed out, he gets between 3-5 million unique views for each video, which is what some cable channels get for their programming. The money makes more sense when put in that perspective.
